Editor,
Oak Harbor has an important decision to make on February 12 – one that will have a huge impact on the future of our schools and our community.
Recent cuts in federal and state funding to the Oak Harbor School District have led to fewer teachers, less class time and the loss of many athletic and after-school activities.
Times are tough and all levels of government should be scrutinized to ensure funds are used wisely and efficiently.
But our district has already had to make huge cuts, and further cuts will drastically affect the quality of our children’s education.
Without our continued support as a community, Oak Harbor schools will be cut to the bone. Even including the Impact Aid provided by the federal government due to NAS Whidbey, local contribution to our schools is well below state average, and is significantly lower than Coupeville, Anacortes, Mount Vernon, South Whidbey — virtually all of our neighbors.
Take pride in Oak Harbor. Vote yes on the Oak Harbor School District Replacement and Renewal Levy and do your part to help ensure our children have a chance at the quality education required to succeed in today’s world.
