Streets unsafe for children

I am writing for the safety of our children. I am a mother of three boys that attend Broadview Elementary School. I would love for them and their friends to be able to walk to school safely but unfortunately, the city feels differently. We live across Whidbey Avenue and our children need to cross the busy street to get to and from school. However, cars don’t think that they need to stop for people at a crosswalk.

My neighbor has called the police and the city to try to get something done so our kids will be safe. She even offered to volunteer her time as a crossing guard. She was told that we cannot stop traffic and that they do not have money to add a crossing light to the Fairhaven Drive and Whidbey Avenue intersection.

So what are we supposed to do, wait for a child to get hit? The high schoolers have one on Heller, why not one for Fairhaven? I am writing this because I feel people should be aware of issues like this. Also to ask people to make more effort to follow the laws for stopping for people at a crosswalk.
