Replace high school coaches

This is in response to the sports page articles from last Saturday’s edition.

I am a retired community member who has lived here in Oak Harbor for 20 years. I do not have children in the school district but do enjoy going to many of the local youth and high school sports activities. I have been an avid sports fan from youth sports to pro sports.

My question would be, now that we are going to have a top-notch sporting facility in our new stadium and fields, maybe we need to have new top-notch coaches.

The articles on three spring sports show we place very, very low in the standings. What I do not understand is that we have top teams in youth sports — from youth football, AAU basketball, select soccer, Little League baseball, Babe Ruth baseball, and swim teams. What happens to all these outstanding young athletes when they reach the high school level?

Football did have an outstanding year as well as cheerleading, and basketball seems to be headed in the right direction under the leadership of a new coach with fresh new ideas. What about the other sports?

How many baseball seasons, how many tennis seasons, or how many soccer seasons before we look at the coaches rather than blame the athletes? Kids do get sick or injured during the season but to use that as your reason for a bad season? How about bad coaching! We have too many good young athletes that are going sour in high school sports. Let’s look at the coaches. Change is good!
