Ready to help folks in need

I would like to share with the great people of Oak Harbor a recent experience that I had when lunching with my son, Doug, at Zorbas. John Allgire joined us. He had jokes to tell us and he talked about his book (which is well worth the read, I bought a copy).

John said that he would like to donate rice, beans and pasta to the Seattle Soup Kitchen. He asked me to facilitate it, which I was glad to do. He also said that he would like me to match his $500 donation, which is typical of his style.

I did match John’s donation. We had a small truckload of rice, beans and pasta that the kitchen picked up. In fact, the truck was so full that they had to get air in their tires before heading back to the soup kitchen.

People like John make our community and our country a great place to live.

I would also like to thank the great people of Oak Harbor who purchased and donated 548 of our Holiday Meal Dinners to Help House. Thanks to you, many in our community enjoyed a large 10- to 12-pound turkey, a four-pound Black Forest ham, five pounds of potatoes, stuffing, cranberry sauce and beans or corn. Without your generosity and kindness they would have had to go without. You, too, are heroes.
