Editor,
For several months now, there has been a pothole at the Oak Harbor post office in the driveway leading up to the outside mail drop box and the parking lot at the front of the building.
Periodically, it gets filled with gravel, but it always returns with a vengeance. To avoid it, drivers using the mail drop box, including this writer, tend to swerve to the right before making the sharp left exit turn into Barrington.
That puts them on a collision course with the faster traffic heading toward the parking lot. I have witnessed several near collisions and have heard a lot of horn honking.
Considering the amount of traffic daily through this driveway, I cannot understand why the pothole is not properly fixed.
Is the postmaster not aware of it? Postal staff drive straight in and park in the back.
Is it a lack of funds? Surely there is someone on this island who can correct this problem.
Absent a better solution, they should consider placing a steel plate over the pothole as we are accustomed to see at road construction sites.
