Peace posters don’t stay up

This past weekend almost 100 people attended the fourth annual Interfaith Vigil of Peace and Hope at Saint Augustine’s Episcopal Church in Freeland. There were presenters from Native American, Christian, Buddhist, Muslim, and Jewish spiritual communities. There were readings, music, speakers and prayers.

As a promoter of this event I had put up a few posters around Coupeville. Throughout the week, I checked the posters around town to see if they were still on the bulletin boards. One of the announcements I had posted in the “Church” section of the public bulletin board in the Coupeville Post Office, which already had several notices from various other churches.

Once again, the poster at the post office for our event was taken down before the event even took place. This has happened many times before to posters announcing any kind of a seeming non-Christian event in our community. We’re wondering if there are individuals or groups in our fair town who are opposed to the idea of peace and hope; or might it be an opposition to the interfaith part of working for peace.

We, and those of like mind in this community, will continue to offer opportunities for one and all to join forces for peace and hope.
