I read with disbelief the editorial opinion column regarding the Oak Harbor School Board position 2 contested between Bill Burnett and David Sherman. I realize this is the newspaper’s opinion and everyone is entitled to his opinion. However, it is obvious that the News-Times has never met Dave Sherman or it he might have a different opinion.

The editorial states, “Mr. Sherman is a fine fellow, but lacks spark.” On the contrary, Mr. Sherman is a very aggressive individual with a dynamic personality who gets things done. He is not afraid to tackle a difficult situation head-on and if he has to step on a few toes to do it, he will. He accepts only perfection, not only from himself, but those under his control.

Speaking of toes, the editorial also states Mr. Sherman “toes the line of his party.” Where did you come up with that garbage. The school board is non-partisan; where’s the party? How would the News-Times even know to which party Mr. Sherman belongs? Perhaps the paper is referring to the party Mr. Sherman will have to celebrate his victory after the election. That’s an ignorant statement as far as I can see.

Then if all this isn’t enough, the editorial attacks Mr. Sherman’s choice in where to have his children educated. If Mr. Sherman wants to send his children to a private school, that is his business and no one else’s. Perhaps Mr. Sherman has an issue with the local public school system and wishes to do what he can to resolve some issues before he sends his children to be educated there. If because Mr. Sherman sends his children to a private school does that make him unqualified or ineligible to sit on the school board? Does not Mr. Sherman pay public school levies and other school taxes like the rest of us? Is he not entitled seek any elected position by virtue of being a citizen? That issue has no reflection on Mr. Sherman’s ability or desire to serve his community as he sees fit.

One attribute Mr. Sherman has is his background in building construction, systems and maintenance which may be just what we need to oversee the spending of the school district on construction and systems ensuring the taxpayers get the most for their tax dollars.
