Newspaper profits from public notices

In response to your Feb. 2 newspaper opinion, “Protect your right to know.”

I read the opinion and for a second I could feel the tears well up in my eyes when you explained how the Whidbey News-Times was standing arm in arm with the populace in protecting their right to be informed of what our government is up to. At one point I stood at attention and recited the “Pledge of Allegiance.” So good of the newspaper to be so concerned with the people’s rights.

Or so it seems, but you didn’t miss the other half of the story, did you? The fact that the Whidbey News-Times is a “for profit” newspaper did not even enter the equation, did it? It was a completely selfless act of the newspaper in looking out for its citizens’ rights?

Please, in the future, include in your story how much the Whidbey News- Times stands to lose when the government stops paying the newspaper to run those public notices. Not so much about the people, is it?
