Letter: Vote for time-proven school board members

Editor,

Whatever your political persuasion, we believe it is time to study your voter’s pamphlet and carefully consider the credentials of the candidates for all Whidbey Island elections, especially the South Whidbey School Board (pages 37, 38, and 39).

Nov. 2 is a critical election for our South Whidbey School District. 3 out of 5 Board members are incumbents and each is being challenged by persons with little or no public service experience and no formal education related to school board guidance and policies.

The three incumbents, Marnie Jackson, Andrea Downs and Ann Johnson, all are dedicated, professional educators with excellent academic credentials and experience. They are demonstrating outstanding leadership in these very challenging times. Committing to serve our community is difficult work and takes patience, insight, compassion, and vision, especially as a School Board member. There are so many challenging issues, like budget balancing, inclusive forward-looking curriculum, teacher and student support, facility infrastructure and security, children’s activities, and wide, often contentious, public views. School Boards must be focused on both short- and long-term children’s wellbeing and preparation for the world they will inherit. Our incumbents have shown they are up to the task!

Judith and I will be voting for Marnie Jackson, Andrea Downs, and Ann Johnson on Nov. 2. Join us on Nov. 2 by voting to ensure our time-proven board members continue to guide our school system and children with the very best education.

It’s time for our democracy to work for all!

Perry and Judith Lovelace
