Letter: Thank you for Veterans Day event in town

Editor,

On Nov. 11 at 11 a.m., the town of Coupeville held a ceremony in front of the Island County courthouse to honor all veterans. I would like to thank Mayor Molly Hughes for her sponsorship and her presentation of the history of the branches of service as the flags of each and the POW-MIA flag were presented by veterans.

I also wish to thank the commander of Chapter 47 Disabled American Veterans, John Callahan, for providing the veterans who placed the flags on the plaza. The Shifty Sailors, as always, added that extra special touch by singing the anthem of each branch of service. Another addition to the ceremony was the handing out of small American flags with tags attached so the people attending could write the name of an honored veteran on the tag and then place the flag in the landscaping at the plaza.

There were 82 flags placed, nine of which were members of my family and two good friends. It was my honor to be involved in the planning of the ceremony and to thank all veterans for their service and dedication to the citizens of the United States of America. Thank you.
