Letter: League of Women Voters Whidbey Island schedules candidate forums

Letter to the Editor

Editor,

The League of Women Voters of Whidbey Island is gearing up for the 2020 general election. With the help of Sno-Isle Regional Libraries, the League’s candidate forums will once again be virtual.

We were very pleased with the large turnout for the primary forums, over 100 viewers each night, and we are planning on even larger numbers for the general election. Attending a forum is now super easy; it is just a mouse click away.

The forums will be on Zoom and have space for 500 attendees.

The link is on the League Website lwvwhidbey.org and here is the line-up:

• 5 p.m. Monday, Oct. 5, Island County Commissioner, positions 1 and 2

• 5 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 6, Legislative District 10 – State Representative position 1&2 , State Senate

• 5 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 8, 2020, Congressional Dist. 2 U.S. Representative, Superior Court Judge positions 1 and 2

The Zoom link will be available two hours before the meeting on the website.

If you are unable to attend, the forums will be recorded and available for viewing on the League’s website. Additional, nonpartisan information about the candidates and voting procedures can be found at the League sponsored website at vote411.org.

Washington state does all of its voting by mail, so it is important to be sure your registration is up to date with your current mailing address. If you have moved, turned 18, changed your name or are a new resident of the state, you may not receive your ballot if you have not registered or updated your registration. You can go to http://www.sos.wa.gov/elections/auditors.aspx# to make these adjustments.

Remember, ballots do not require postage, but to be counted they must be postmarked on or before Nov. 3.

Also, drop boxes are placed in many locations throughout Island County. However, they are locked after 8 p.m. on Nov. 3. It always a good idea to mark and return your ballot promptly.

Finally, be sure you are counted. Make sure you, your family and neighbors complete their Census 2020.

Your vote is your voice. Speak up. Our democracy depends on it.
