Letter: Howard knows how to make government work

Editor,

Nathan Howard gets things done.

We voters are fortunate to have four good people running for District 1 Island County commissioner. I feel the best of these is Nathan Howard.

I worked in the building trades most of the 40-plus years I have lived in Coupeville, and I have always been concerned for the island environment, too.

When Nathan worked as a planner for Island County a few years back, the company I work for was running into problems getting county permits for heat pumps on waterfront properties. The Washington state shorelines regulation was interpreting the placement of a 1.5-by-3-foot precast concrete pad on the ground as a major construction project that slowed the permitting process by requiring environmental review and additional permits.

Nathan Howard could see the unfairness of this and spent about three months in meetings with state and county offices to find a workable solution.

I know government is a complicated machine that will soon break down without skilled mechanics to keep it running smooth.

Nathan Howard is just such a mechanic who knows how to make government work for everyone, I urge you to vote for him.
