Letter: Grateful for all those who serve on front lines

Feels like high time our community offer a heartfelt thank you to those who have given themselves to service in daunting and tragic circumstances on our behalf.

I am thinking particularly of those who have served on the front lines in the 20-year war in Afghanistan and the 20-month COVID battle in hospitals. They have endured and witnessed suffering from circumstances not of their own making. The fact that the rest of us are capable of living daily mundane lives completely insulated from their pain adds to the tragedy of both circumstances.

I want to say to all of you: a heartfelt “thank you” for serving, and a heartfelt apology that you have too often awakened to serve a population that does not have your sacrifice foremost in our minds and hearts. It’s on all of us to change that.
