Editor,
I couldn’t agree more with Barbara Banfield regarding length, decency and writer frequency in letters to the editor.
I look to our community newspaper for insightful news and opinion.
When I read this paper’s letters to the editor, I often can’t help but feel like I’m slowing down to stare at an unfortunate vehicle accident; I hate myself for doing it, but can’t resist taking a long look at the terrible mess.
Please be more selective in your choices of what to print instead of catering to our baser selves. Many letters are thoughtful, informative and cover a variety of issues. But many of us are done reading what our neighbors think of Trump, Antifa and the Proud Boys.
Unless there is a strong local connection, can we please move on?
Perhaps you can make room for more news about issues that concern us all, such as Whidbey General’s heroic response to the vaccination challenge; what our new and reelected town, county, legislative district and congressional leaders are up to; more on schools and businesses challenges and responses to the pandemic; and more on our island’s amazing artists, writers, restauranteurs and other creatives.
