Letter: Claim made by candidate is dangerous

Editor,

According to the Aug. 13 Whidbey News-Times, Jessica Thompson, who is running for the Oak Harbor School Board, announced at the last school board meeting that parents know what is best for their children, and she is convinced that wearing masks harms rather than helps them.

On her election website she claims that “science and research has shown that our children are not the ones at risk for the virus.”

However, if you Google “children and COVID,” you immediately see that 13% of those diagnosed with COVID-19 are children, and that hospitals in the southern United States are overwhelmed with children who have been infected with the delta variant.

The rest of Thompson’s claims on her website are just as untrue, but this claim is the most dangerous. Yet she asserts that she stands for “wholesome” values.

Seriously? The very idea of her being elected to a school board is truly scary. No doubt she cares about the welfare of children but apparently she does not make much of an effort to stay informed.
