Letter: Bacon, a problem solver, trusted leader, prepared

Editor,

A lot has changed since I moved to Whidbey Island 42 years ago. There was only one stop light on the entire Island. The rural character, the sense of community, and the quality of life drew me in and kept me here ever since.

That’s why I’m supporting Melanie Bacon for Island County commissioner, District 1. Calling on her vast experience, Melanie can help strengthen that quality of life by protecting our environment and meeting the needs of all of our citizens, including our most vulnerable.

She has a very clear vision for what she wants Island County to look like in 10 years, including the steps the County needs to take to achieve it. I like her vision — and I like the fact that she’s planning not just for our Island County of today but also for what Island County should be for the generations to come.

I encourage you to visit her website and learn for yourself why Melanie is the best candidate for county commissioner. You will find in-depth information about her 2030 vision and her vast and relevant job experiences, including her public service in military intelligence with the U.S. Army; as a consultant to tribal governments; as a now leader; as a prison chaplain; and so much more.

Melanie is uniquely qualified to step into the role of Island County Commissioner. Island County’s Human Resources Director for 10 years, Melanie’s job touches every single department, including working closely with Island County Commissioners. She understands health and human resources, planning and community development, environmental issues, law and justice operations, county budget complexities, and the community issues that continue to impact South Whidbey.

During this COVID-19 crisis, Melanie has been tasked to lead internal daily operations at the County, redeploying staff as needed, resolving urgent daily operational issues, and working on solutions to help us recover as quickly and safely as possible. She is a problem solver and a trusted leader. Melanie is the candidate who is most prepared for the job.

You won’t find this on her website, but I happen to know that Melanie is a published author of fiction and was also a writer for the National Lampoon; a member of the popular Whidbey Island choral group Chanteuse; and a self-described “baton twirling, tap dancing, storm trooping” actress. She raised two sons as a single mother while starting and running a small-business, and is now a loving and beloved grandma.

This is a woman who gets things done!

Please join me and vote for Melanie Bacon for Island County Commissioner, District 1.
