Letter: Actions not consistent with being good steward

Editor,

I am writing in response to Capt. Matt Arny’s recent Sound Off.

I found it lacking in truth and accuracy. Dumping jet fuel, polluting the water table with carcinogenic fire retardants and exporting sleep depriving, auto immune and attention disrupting toxic noise to Coupeville is not consistent with being a good “steward of the environment.”

Nor is it consistent with our “historic preserve.”

With regard to his statement about the Growlers’ impact on the orcas, the Navy previously stated it would anticipate incidental casualties from electronic warfare operations.

The killer whale population cannot sustain that.

Does anyone believe exposure to sonar is helping their recovery?

On Aug. 26, I witnessed a jet fly directly through a flock of geese on their daily migration to the Crockett Lake Wildlife Refuge.

The migration occurs at dawn and dusk that time of year and is more predictable than April rain, yet the jets continue to fly in their airspace.

As the pilot appeared to struggle controlling the aircraft, the incident could have resulted in a crash in which case there might have been human casualties.

Either we are going to try and save our whales and protect endangered wildlife or not.

Like their EIS, the scientific studies the Navy conducts support its activities.
