Judging by the replies to my last letter, it seems I’ve been misunderstood. For those who think I’m just here to be a bagger-basher, this just isn’t true; I have had some good experiences with the occasional bagger at the commissary.
I’d also like to point out that despite the bad image others seemed to have pinned on me, I’m always polite and respectful to people I meet, it’s not as if my attitude is what prompts bad service (which should never be excused anyway).
I feel that baggers, like all people in the service industry, should try to earn their tips with good service. Who can argue with that? This entire problem could be solved if the cashier simply asked the customer: “Would you like a bagger today?”
Finally I agree with the idea that the Whidbey News-Times was never the right place for this discussion in the first place; I just wanted to clear the air and say that I plan on offering the above solution to DFAS itself. Thank you.
