Consider alternative site for Oak Harbor’s RV Park | Letter

Editor,

Like Oak Harbor Councilman Jim Campbell, I wish to express my disappointment that the RV park is to be eliminated from Windjammer Park, though I do understand that it will make more space available for other park elements.

I, too, am an RVer and appreciate a park as well-situated as Windjammer’s: walking distance to good big-box shopping and small shops, fine walking trail for humans and dogs, play area for kids, beach to explore and a great view.

During my travels, I haven’t encountered any having that fine combination, so I hate to see that asset disappear from Oak Harbor.

However, there is potential for a great alternative. I think that the Freund property — just across the road from the current RV park — would be a location for a new RV park, if the owners are interested.

What I envision is an RV park that would integrate and complement the nature trail and native habitat area on the north and the new landscaping and changes to Windjammer.

It could easily be designed to blend in well with both areas so the RV park would appear as a seamless extension of the whole area.

To me, it would be a win for all — more income for local businesses, a great experience for RVers, more touristic advertisement value for Oak Harbor and Whidbey Island, and income value for the property owners.

And it could still carry on with the name of Windjammer RV Park.
