Letter: Black Lives Matters movement means concern for fellow man

Editor,

For the last month or so I have flown a Black Lives Matters flag above an American flag to support the Black Lives Matter movement and express my feelings of sorrow about America.

I recently had a neighbor come to my door to tell me that the American flag should never be flown below any other flag. He told me that it was illegal to do so.

Technically, it is illegal to fly the flag in this manner, but it also illegal to wear any clothing that has the American flag imprinted on it.

Luckily, the courts are not enforcing these laws.

He also told me that I was disrespecting the people who fought and died for the flag.

I respect his feelings and probably even shared those feelings not so long ago. But to me the Black Lives Matters movement has come to mean concern for my fellow man, while the American flag in the current political environment has come to mean turmoil and divisiveness. Our current President has wrapped himself if the flag. I find him so repulsive that I can’t help but have some of these same feelings toward the flag.

I would like to say to all my neighbors I will change my current flag arrangement when, hopefully, the disgusting person currently leading our country leaves office. If he doesn’t leave office in January, I will continue the current flag arrangement.
