Beware of requests to send gift cards | Letter

Editor,

I would like to send my deepest thanks to the employees of the Rite-Aid Pharmacy in Oak Harbor for the good counsel and help they gave me when I was in their store about three weeks ago. They noticed I was purchasing several gift debit cards for large amounts.

They warned me that there were some instances of scamming detected in the store. Some women had come in to get these cards to send to people asking for money by phone. They were pretending to know family members who were in trouble, declaring that they needed money to help them get out of trouble.

I had been asked to provide bail money for a grandson so he could get out of jail. Because of these employees’ warnings — and God’s protection — I did not lose any money.

The sheriff was very helpful, too. He told me these scammers are probably not on Whidbey Island or in Seattle at the jail. They often are not in the state but calling from other countries.

My gratitude goes out to those at Rite-Aid for making me, and others, aware of the danger of con-men who are preying on the most vulnerable people in our community.

May God bless you for caring enough to take action to help.
