Admiral makes the wrong call

As a candidate for Oak Harbor City Council Position 1, I have enjoyed an interesting campaign season. I find myself much more in agreement with my opponent, Mr. Jim Palmer, than at odds. I have appreciated the opportunity to discuss differences, not many, at our forum appearances.

What I do take offense at is an endorsement letter for Jim published in the Oct. 20 Whidbey News-Times. As signed this letter was written by Lyle F. Bull, Rear Adm., USN (RET), a man whom I have had the greatest respect for the past 30 some years. By inference, the admiral indicated that I would be a disruptive presence on the city. To quote, “Vote for Jim Palmer, do not make the new mayor put up with what Mayor Cohen has had to.” It is obvious that the admiral has not a clue as to my performance on the city council during the time I served previously, when I was very often the voice of reason and calm. He quotes my opponent’s ability to get the job done, obviously forgetting the many things that were accomplished in the past when I worked for him, which I did for a good many years.

Granted I am not a Rotarian and I did not assist in raising money for Wildcat Memorial Stadium, but unlike my opponent, spent many days in weather fair and foul to promote yea votes on school levies that relate to quality buildings and education.

I have nothing against endorsement letters, or with the admiral endorsing Mr. Palmer. If you want to state that your choice is a good candidate, just don’t do it by inferring his opponent will be an inferior representative.

I run for the office to represent the people as I did before, and I also believe I did it well.
