Bakery owner Marti Krotz claims her frosting is to die for. She has her granddaughter Jessica Brown scoop some onto a spoon and offers up a taste. The fluffy white mixture hasn’t even been flavored yet, but Marti Krotz is still right.
Krotz opened Yummies’ Eats and Treats bakery and deli in August with her two daughters and two granddaughters. The bakery, located under Frasers Gourmet Hideaway in Oak Harbor, offers everything from bear claws to raspberry and cream cheese coffee cake to deli sandwiches, all types of coffee drinks and unique cupcakes.
The bakery’s yellow walls and cheery interior give it a cozy, mama’s kitchen kind of vibe.
“We really didn’t have to do anything but slap up some flowers and coffee pots on the walls,” Krotz said with regard to taking over the space. “It felt like us.”
Krotz, a retired respiratory therapist, based the bakery’s menu off of family recipes and maintains high standards of food quality and presentation.
“We try to keep everything really fresh,” she said.
Brown comes in at night and spends the evening baking products for the next morning so the pastries are never stale, and the items that don’t get sold in a timely manner are donated to the North Whidbey Help House.
Brown said one of the most popular items is her Boston Cream croissants, but the bakery is quickly becoming known for its designer cupcakes. Yummies’ has traditional cupcake flavors like chocolate, vanilla and red velvet, but it also boasts creations like butterscotch chip, cookies and cream, Honeymoon Bay mocha and the infamous bacon maple — a vanilla cupcake with bacon bits baked in and topped with candied bacon and maple buttercream.
“The minute they’re out, they’re gone,” Brown said of the bacon treat. She said costumers have come from all over the Northwest seeking the cupcake, and recently, Whidbey Coffee has started selling Yummies’ cupcakes too. For the older crowd, Krotz has also developed a “slightly sinful” cupcake menu with flavors like chocolate margarita, sour appletini and Irish car bomb, and she’s currently working on a line of cupcakes centered on wines.
Krotz said one of the best things about Yummies’ is its specialty cake design. Krotz and her daughters and granddaughters take custom orders for any cake occasion like weddings, anniversaries and birthdays.
“Pretty much anything goes,” Krotz said. “I’ve done dairy free, egg free, low sugar and full fat and sugar,” she said.
Yummies’ also does catering service and offers delivery to costumers in the Oak Harbor area.
The bakery and deli is located at 1191 SE Dock St., No. 2 in Oak Harbor. Its hours are 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Saturday.
