After a round of jubilant licking and prancing, Kaida stretched out on the floor. As her owners thrilled about her accomplishments of Best in Show and Grand Champion, Kaida yawned, the picture of nonchalance, and took a nap.

The 2-year-old Shiba Inu had a busy weekend winning two Best of Breed awards at the Wenatchee Kennel Club. Her fancy registered name is “Dragon House That Jones Girl!”

Dr. Mays bids farewell to way of life...
    By Rebecca Olson • September 24, 2011 9:00 am

When Dr. Jane Mays started her pediatrician clinic in Oak Harbor in 1979, she hoped to retire in the same gorgeous, rural place. Now that dream is coming true.

Mays was the first female doctor on Whidbey Island. Her one-person office in a small, rented room in downtown Oak Harbor transformed into Pediatric Associates of Whidbey Island — after a few moves and plenty of hard work.

“I adore being involved in the lives of children and young families,” Mays said. “Seeing them go from cradle to professionals has been the most rewarding of all.”

The tentative four-year contract between Public School Employees of Oak Harbor and the Oak Harbor School District calls for no wage or benefit changes this year.

“I think everyone involved recognized that current economic conditions have left the district with little if anything extra to offer financially,” Kurt Schonberg, the district’s director of human resources, said in a press release. “On the other hand, we were able to improve and update many aspects of the contract in ways beneficial to everyone.”

People of all ages gathered at Windjammer Park for the Sept. 11 memorial ceremony Sunday, memories of the terrorist attacks in 2001 flooding back to them.

“I can’t believe it’s 10 years. It seems like yesterday,” Marilynn Capen said. Her daughter had joined the Navy to fund college before the attacks. Capen said she remembered that on Sept. 11, 2001 the phone started ringing, calling everyone back to the base, including her daughter.
