    Diving deep beneath the surface of the water was like no other feeling in the world to Peter M. Hunt, Oak Harbor author of, “Setting the Hook: A Diver’s Return to the Andrea Doria.”

    As he descended the anchor line into the cold, hazy water of the Atlantic Ocean, it was the first sight of the wreck that stayed with him. It was a different reality every dive as he saw different parts of the wreck and some parts were lost due to storms.

    Lions screen kids’ hearing, vision

    Hundreds of elementary school students streamed into the Lions Health Screening Unit for hearing and vision screenings this week, a relief for the three school nurses serving Oak Harbor School District.

    The screening unit is based in Seattle and travels around Washington and Idaho doing health screenings for schools and the general public.

    With the approach of the 2013 levy next year, the Oak Harbor School District seeks input on what should be included.

    The school board meeting includes a public forum Monday, Jan. 9 at 6:30 p.m. to address whether funding for transportation and food services should be included in the regular maintenance and operation levy.

    The circles within circles on Marianne Burr’s quilts seem to be the stars of the show, but upon closer examination, thousands of tiny stitches give life to Burr’s hand painted, hand stitched quilts. Rows and rows of colorful stitches give the circles a three-dimensional effect and add color and emotion.

    Burr, of Coupeville, is no ordinary quilter as the art she entered into the 11th Quilt Nihon exhibition earned her the most impressive honor she’s ever been awarded: A one-week trip to Japan and the opportunity to teach a workshop there.

    Impact Aid payments may become more timely

    While no increase in Federal Impact Aid funding is expected for the Oak Harbor School District in 2012, a new bill in Congress will help the district receive its funding in a more timely manner, according to Oak Harbor School District Superintendent Rick Schulte.

    The Impact Aid Timely Repayment Act of 2011, introduced by Second District Rep. Rick Larsen, will require the Department of Education to pay school districts their Impact Aid funds in less than three years instead of the current six years.

    Planned Parenthood of the Great Northwest

    After 26 years of service, Whidbey Island’s only Planned Parenthood clinic will close Dec. 31.

    The clinic is located at 3159 N. Goldie Road in Oak Harbor. Clinics in Forks and Silverdale will also close as the organization copes with state and federal funding losses.

    Cheerful singing filled the Oak Harbor Senior Center Monday as sixth-grade students from North Whidbey Middle School brought the holidays to life in song.

    North Whidbey Middle School choral director Linda McLean used to take the seventh and eighth-grade choirs to sing for the seniors and is working to make this an annual event again. This was the first time she took the sixth-grade choir.
