While the Coupeville Shiba Inu dog, Kaida, didn’t place in the prestigious Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show Feb. 13 and 14 in New York City, she was the constant center of attention.
Kaida, whose registered name is GCh Dragon House That Jones Girl!, was bred by Sandi Smith of Langley and lives with co-owners John and Alice Schisel of Coupeville.

Of the district budget, 83 percent is spent on salary, wages and benefits, said Superintendent Rick Schulte.

To Oak Harbor Middle School band instructor Patrick Manuel, real-world experience, responsibility and learning how to work under pressure are vital to education. Manuel fills his band classes with these experiences and earned recognition for his band, and in turn was named Music Educator of the Year by the San Juan Music Educators Association.
Oak Harbor High School was vandalized with graffiti last weekend but it was painted over on Monday.
The police came to take photos of the graffiti, which consisted of symbols but no foul language, said Bruce Worley, executive director for maintenance and operations for the school district.
“We jump right on graffiti because it reminds us people do bad things,” Worley said.
