New business brings the party to Oak Harbor
    By Rebecca Olson • April 10, 2012 4:43 pm

It’s the new home of Darth Vader pinatas and fluffy feather boas. Angry Birds balloons, classy candles and zebra-print plates and cups are also in stock because it’s party time once again in Oak Harbor.

Whidbey Islanders no longer have to travel off-island for party supplies thanks to the newly opened Whidbey Party Store.

Robyn and Orin Kolaitis, owners, held a grand opening celebration March 29.

View the art at the second annual Stations of the Cross exhibit. It opened Tuesday and continues daily through Easter Sunday, April 8, at the Pacific Rim Institute south of Coupeville.

With her blue hair, one-eyed teddy bear and curious remarks, Ethel Savage may appear to be the insane one. But as her family shows their true colors and has her admitted into a mental institution, insanity isn’t so clear cut in the Whidbey Playhouse production of “The Curious Savage,” opening Friday, April 6.

First-grade students at Olympic View Elementary School pulled their parents along by one hand last Wednesday, and used the other hand to point out fire-bellied newts, fire-bellied frogs and a leopard gecko in their own classroom.

Even better than showing their parents and siblings their latest school project is that they get to take part of it home. Brian Knoll, owner of Island Pet Center, made mini aquariums for each of the students and they will bring home their own pet fish.

Salty sea bass with a touch of sweet maple glaze, steak cooked both tender and rare, goat cheese mousse and chocolate curls colored with cocoa butter — these may not seem like the kind of dishes students can cook in one hour using two butane burners and no electrical appliances, but the Wildcat Culinary Team turned up the heat at the state ProStart competition in Olympia March 2 and 3 and cooked up another sweet success.

    By Rebecca Olson • March 16, 2012 6:27 pm

The Oak Harbor School Board passed a motion Monday that Superintendent Rick Schulte said should benefit taxpayers to the tune of about half a million dollars.

The resolution delegates authority to Schulte to approve the sale and refunding of all or a portion of the bonds sold in 2006 for the Oak Harbor High School remodel. Voters approved $54 million in bonds in 2006.

“If interest rates are favorable, then I would approve that refunding,” Schulte said.
