    Thousands enjoy Oak Harbor’s Thanksgiving dinner

    Hundreds of volunteers spent their Thanksgiving making sure thousands of people had a festive ham and turkey dinner.

    The army of volunteers was necessary to make sure North Whidbey’s Community Harvest at the Oak Harbor Elks Lodge took place without a hitch. Volunteer Roger Anglum said people started arriving at 5:30 Thursday morning to start cooking the 600 pounds of ham and 150 turkeys that provided the main course for the Thanksgiving feast.

    With taxpayer funding for state parks dried up, worried state parks officials are seeing user fees aren’t bringing in as much money as expected.

    Five months after it was implemented, the Discover Pass, which provides money for Washington State Parks, the Department of Fish and Wildlife and the Department of Natural Resources, raised $7.2 million through the end of October.

    The five-member body is considering an ordinance that would allow golf carts and similarly sized electric vehicles to travel on most town roads.

    A steady budget that includes several significant construction projects is scheduled to be approved Friday morning by the Island Transit board of directors.

    Island Transit officials are currently proposing a $25.6 million budget for the year 2012, which is slightly less than the $26 million budgeted for the current year.

    Plans were unveiled Tuesday showing what would appear to be a second wharf at the opposite end of Front Street in historic downtown Coupeville.
    Instead of a long pier with businesses at the end of it, it would be a community deck located in part of the vacant waterfront space between Toby’s Tavern and the Knead and Feed.

    Nearly two months into the school year, Coupeville school teachers, administrators and staff already find themselves in an unnerving situation. They are bracing for funding losses in the middle of the school year while still providing a quality education for students on Central Whidbey Island.

    Rumors have been flying about education reductions coming from the state to resolve an expected $1.4 billion reduction in revenues. School administrators also learned this week to expect reductions from federal sources.

    The pair were riding recently in a quadracycle, a four-wheeled pedal-powered machine that seats two people and a cargo carrier on the back.

    Meals for seniors hiked in Coupeville

    In hopes of providing a healthy meal to more senior citizens, a countywide meals program is scheduled to expand next month.

    Senior Services of Island County is partnering with the Coupeville United Methodist Church, the town of Coupeville and the Coupeville Lions Club to offer a new program that will begin in early November.

    Once a construction project is complete, Island Transit’s headquarters will be more than eight times larger than its current home.

    Island Transit, widely known for its free bus service, was recently awarded $17.92 million in federal funding to help pay for a 51,000-square-foot transit center on Central Whidbey Island that will include new administrative offices, maintenance bays for its fleet and a refueling facility.
