    A proposal to allow alcohol to be served during special events at three Oak Harbor parks took a step forward this week.

    The Oak Harbor Park Board recommended Wednesday that the Oak Harbor City Council sign off on a proposal to allow the sale of alcohol at approved special events at Windjammer Park, Fort Nugent Park and Catalina Park, which is located near the Oak Harbor Marina.

    A Freeland man was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center and Hospital in Seattle after crashing his car Wednesday morning on Highway 20 on Central Whidbey Island.

    At approximately 11:20 a.m., Freeland resident Edward Sawyers, 74, was driving a Mercury Villager north on Highway 20 when he veered off the road just south of the intersection near Libbey Road, went partway down an embankment and crashed into some trees.

    “He just drifted off the road. I’m not sure why,” said Howard Bledsoe, who lives near Libbey Road and witnessed the accident.

    A group of Whidbey General Hospital employees attended the June 10 hospital commissioner meeting to express concerns about long hours they work, often days at a time with no days off or no vacation, and their less-than-average wages.

    Around 40 people, many of whom work in the hospital’s laboratory, attended the monthly meeting to address the commissioners.

    A gas tax being considered by the state Legislature could, if adopted, make the ferry system financially stable for more than a decade.

    David Moseley, assistant secretary for the Washington State Department of Transportation Ferries Division, met with Coupeville business leaders at a Tuesday morning chamber of commerce meeting, and highlighted a package of bills that he said would make the ferry system financially stable for the next 12-15 years. But that stability comes at a price.

    Voters will decide this November whether to increase property taxes to fund a $50-million expansion of Whidbey General Hospital.

    Monday night, hospital commissioners voted to place the bond proposal on the general election ballot. The bond will pay for construction of a new wing at the hospital’s Coupeville campus.

    Graduation honors close-knit class

    Nearly 70 students spent their last moments together Friday.

    Coupeville High School’s Class of 2013, many of whom have been together since grade school, graduated Friday night during a ceremony at the high school gymnasium. Following the festivities, the graduates will head in separate directions. Some will attend college, while others will enlist in the military or head into the workforce.

    One high school student’s senior project is going to help the Island County Museum.

    Senior Ben Carlson spent most of his senior year designing and building a wooden wagon that is one-fifth scale of one that was used by settlers in the 19th century when they made their journey west on the Oregon Trail. That wagon will be donated to the museum, which will be used for education and outreach efforts.

    Coupeville’ Class of 2013 top 10 graduates

    Coupeville High School’s Class of 2013 features two valedictorians who are both graduating high school with a 4.0 grade point average. Since two students finished with the same grade point average, 11 students comprise the Top 10.
