    “Persistence” was the theme for Oak Harbor High School’s commencement Monday

    “Wildcats, through your hard work and dedication, you’ve taken the first step of this next pyramid in your lives,” said Rachel Margraf, one of three Oak Harbor valedictorians.

    Graduate Tricia Desquitado said a teacher once told her commencement ceremonies allow parents and families “to see what you’ve done, so they can see that you finished high school, so they can be proud of you.”

    Hillcrest and Oak Harbor elementary schools held fundraisers to benefit worthy causes this past Friday.

    Hillcrest held a walkathon, during which students walked and ran around a field in exchange for donations.

    Oak Harbor Elementary opted for a different tactic. Students there jump-roped for donations.

    Gino Wolfe said he retired from a 29-year career in the Navy and when he saw the parks and rec district was hiring for the key position.

    A grease fire destroyed a mobile home on Spitfire Lane in Oak Harbor Friday afternoon. No one was injured.

    The blaze, which damaged the doublewide home, was apparently caused when grease used for deep frying caught fire and spread.

    A college building in Oak Harbor will be jazzed up for a week with a smorgasbord of artwork, including one giant purple unicorn.

    Lowell Sipes, art teacher at North Whidbey Middle School, has arranged an art show for students from kindergarten through 12th grade at Skagit Valley Community College’s Oak Hall.

    Two former Oak Harbor High School DECA members took home top awards after competing with college students from across the nation in business and leadership-related contests.

    Nathan Young and Sasha Olson, who graduated from Oak Harbor in 2010 and 2011, respectively, went to DECA’s national collegiate competition in Washington, D.C. on April 23.

    Oak Harbor School Board adopts new curriculum

    During the Oak Harbor School District board meeting last week, the board adopted a new secondary social studies curriculum, which was in the works for months.

    The biggest change in the curriculum is the replacement of “modern world problems” classes with “modern global economics.”
