    For the past year, Town of Coupeville officials have been exploring options in dealing with staffing issues within the marshal’s office.

    Mayor Nancy Conard said the issue began a little more than a year ago with a sudden turnover within the department.

    The town is looking at two options, to keep its department with changes to staffing, or to contract with the Island County Sheriff’s Office.

    Coupeville Town Council unanimously passed a $5.1 million budget for 2014 last week.

    Changes to the budget include a 5 percent cost of living increase for employees, which was something Mayor Nancy Conard said was a priority this year.

    Wifi zone goes live in downtown Coupeville

    Visitors to downtown Coupeville can now access the Internet free of charge.

    A free wifi zone was created by the Coupeville Historic Waterfront Association with financial partnership with Allstate Insurance and Town of Coupeville. The zone encompasses the downtown corridor from Coupeville Inn to Main Street and down onto the wharf.

    CWHA started the project earlier last year and has been working to find the best system for the project.

    Coupeville Town Council will hold a public hearing next week to seek input on the draft $5.1 million 2014 budget.

    The document reflects a few changes to town finances including a 5 percent cost of living increase for town employees.

    Voters approve hospital bond, choose new port commissioners

    Whidbey General Hospital bond supporters were celebrating Tuesday night as preliminary results show the bond is passing with more than a 60 percent supermajority.

    Initial results posted by the Island County Auditor’s Office showed the bond was passing with 61.75 percent voter approval.
