    France honors Whidbey veteran with highest award

    He didn’t really know it, but Roy McWilliams had been waiting for this moment nearly all of his life.

    In a special ceremony Saturday morning at the Oak Harbor Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7392 on Goldie Road, McWilliams received the French Legion of Honor medal — the French government’s highest recognition.

    Oak Harbor’s first Veterans Day parade was an unqualified success.

    Mother Nature poured on the sunshine and hundreds of people lined Pioneer Way downtown to watch the procession, which honored all branches of the Armed Forces, police and firefighters.

    Two EA-6B Prowlers from Whidbey Island Naval Air Station Electronic Attack Squadron (VAQ) 129 got the parade rolling with a flyover down Pioneer Way.

    Author shares ‘One More Sunrise’

    Jack McPherson never intended to write a book, it just sort of happened.

    The longtime Coupeville resident recently self-published “One More Sunrise,” the story of two young military men with nothing in common but the bond they developed as prisoners of war in Vietnam.

    The book is fiction, although McPherson did draw on his experiences in Vietnam during his time in the Navy.

    There were no tricks but plenty of treats Wednesday as the Rooks of Electronic Attack Squadron (VAQ) 137 returned to Naval Air Station Whidbey Island after an eight-month deployment on the USS Enterprise (CVN 65).

    Cheers erupted from the small crowd gathered at Hangar 8 as the squadron was spotted on its approach for a diamond formation fly-over.
