    That’s the philosophy behind the Coupeville Community Education program. The school district offers classes for youth and adults three times a year, and the winter session is starting up in January.

    A third-grade student at Broadview Elementary School in Oak Harbor got an early present from Santa Thursday morning.

    When Nathan Dixon, 9, brought the attendance sheet into the office for his teacher, he had no idea his mom, Navy Logistics Specialist 1st Class Pilar Arteaga, would be there to surprise him.

    “Mommy!” he cried as she crept up behind him, drawing him into a close embrace and rocking him back and forth.

    The Oak Harbor Area Council of the Navy League and the Oak Harbor Rotary Club joined forces Friday to honor the best of the best at the groups’ 39th annual Sailor and Marine of the Year awards.

    At a ceremony held at the Officers’ Club on Whidbey Island Naval Air Station, Naval Aircrewman Mechanical 1st Class David Smith, Cryptologic Technician Technical 1st Class Stephanie Henning and Marine Corps Staff Sgt. Albert Goodson were selected the Sea Sailor, Shore Sailor and Marine of the Year, respectively.

    Ten gay couples became some of the first in Island County to take advantage of Washington’s new same-sex marriage laws Sunday when they tied the knot at a private ceremony in Langley.

    Officiated by Coupeville Mayor Nancy Conard, the weddings were held at the home of one of the nation’s most famous gay couples: Grethe Cammermeyer and Diane Divelbess. They were one of the couples who wed.

    Whidbey residents remember Pearl Harbor

    Gray skies were but a reflection of the somber mood at a Pearl Harbor Remembrance ceremony held Friday at Crescent Harbor Marina on Naval Air Station Whidbey Island’s Seaplane Base.

    The traditional remembrance service was put together by Electronic Attack Squadron (VAQ) 129 and included community members, local Pearl Harbor survivors as well as other active duty personnel. Although the weather didn’t cooperate, the rain didn’t dampen the emotional spirit of the message that has lived on since that infamous day.

    “Freedom is the price and each generation pays its due,” said Cmdr. Lew Callaway, Executive Officer of VAQ-129.

    Navy Band Northwest kicks off holidays

    For many Oak Harbor area residents, the holiday season isn’t official until Navy Band Northwest has performed its annual concert.

    The band performed before a packed house Saturday evening at Oak Harbor High School’s Student Union building.

    “We always know we’re going to have a great turnout whenever we come to Oak Harbor,” said band director Lt. Robert Coats. “It’s a wonderful opportunity to interact with the community.”
