In observance of a time-honored tradition, Naval Hospital Oak Harbor held a formal change of command ceremony Friday, Aug. 31 at Whidbey Island Naval Air Station.

Mother Nature provided picture-perfect weather for the ceremony, which was held in the outdoor amphitheater of the Naval Ocean Processing Facility, a scenic backdrop as Capt. In a ceremony complete with all the pomp and circumstance only the Navy can muster, leadership of Patrol and Reconnaissance Wing 10 on Whidbey Island Naval Air Station changed hands Friday, Aug. 14.

Capt. Peter Garvin was relieved by Capt. Steven Deal in a formal Change of Command before a large crowd in Hangar 6. Fellow officers, community leaders, special guests and family members were all present to watch Garvin pass the leadership baton to Deal for the 33rd time since Wing 10 was established in 1940.

It was a very good day to run a race and Windjammer Park in Oak Harbor was a very good locale for the sixth annual Maj. Megan McClung Memorial Run held last Saturday.

Fog hung over the water of Crescent Harbor as 148 runners lined up, the first group departing for the 10K run, the second group leaving two minutes later for the 5K run or walk.

There is still time to register for the 6th annual Megan McClung Memorial Run, set for Saturday, Aug. 18 in a new location — downtown Oak Harbor.

After five years of running the annual 5 and 10K event on Naval Air Station Whidbey Island, the event will now begin at Windjammer Park in Oak Harbor, near the intersection of S. Beeksma Drive and SW Bayshore Drive. The new course will parallel the beach around the harbor and winds through the wharf area on Catalina Drive to intersect with the Maylor Point Trail on NAS Whidbey’s Seaplane Base.
