    Wolves return home for big win

    Home is where the wins are.

    After playing its first five games on the road, the Coupeville High School girls basketball team finally played on its own floor and it was a happy homecoming, defeating rival South Whidbey 39-24 Friday, Dec. 14.

    Coach David King said, “It was good to be home and playing in front of our home crowd. The girls could feel the energy the fans brought.”

    La Conner and Cedarcrest both effectively used full court presses to put away the visiting Coupeville High School girls basketball team last week.

    The Braves defeated the Wolves 53-27 Thursday, Dec. 6, and the Red Wolves won 62-24 Friday, Dec. 7, in the conference opener.

    Turnovers are a common theme so far this season for the Coupeville High School boys basketball team, and the mistakes undercut strong efforts in three recent losses.

    The Wolves lost 57-24 at University Prep in Seattle Tuesday, Dec. 4; 74-25 at La Conner Thursday, Dec. 6; and 69-39 at home to Cedarcrest Friday, Dec. 7.

    The Coupeville boys basketball team lost 57-25 at University Prep in Seattle Tuesday, Dec. 4, but the mark in the loss column wasn’t the only setback.
    The Wolves’ floor leader and strongest all-around player Gavin O’Keefe broke his foot and is out for the year, a heavy blow to a young team trying to build a winning identify.

    CHS grads continue athletic careers in college

    Several Coupeville High School graduates continued their athletic efforts on the collegiate stage this fall.

    Kyle King, a transfer from Eastern Washington University, wrapped up his college cross-country career at the University of Oklahoma where he placed 36th in the Big 12 championship meet Oct. 27. His top finish was 15th at the Virginia Invitational Sept. 22.

    Coupeville pair earn all-league volleyball honors

    When the Cascade Conference announced its all-league teams recently, two Coupeville athletes were among those honored.

    Senior Bessie Walstad and sophomore Hailey Hammer, both middle blockers, were selected for the all-conference second team in volleyball.

    Walstad, who was an honorable mention choice in 2011, said, “It was a good way to go out my senior year. If was definitely a goal, and it would have been sad if I hadn’t been at least honorable mention.”

    David King, after helping with the Coupeville High School girls basketball team since 2003, is now the new head coach of the program.

    He takes over this fall after Jackie Bykonen resigned after two years at the helm.

    Spectators at the Coupeville/Chimacum football game at Port Townsend Saturday, Nov. 3, were treated to a track meet as the Cowboys won a wild one, 56-39.

    The game featured a handful of big-yardage plays, many courtesy of the Wolves’ Jake Tumblin. The junior wingback piled up 407 all-purpose yards and four touchdowns. The game also featured a Coupeville rally that included three touchdowns in less than three minutes in the final period.

    Looking for some relief from a tough regular season, the Coupeville High School soccer team didn’t find any in the district tournament, losing 6-0 at Lynden Christian Wednesday, Oct. 24.

    While Lynden Christian (10-6) dominated the first half, going up 2-0, Coupeville (1-16) came out energized in the second and appeared it might get back into the match, controlling the ball the first 10 minutes.

    Wolves fall in football

    Meridian defeated the Coupeville football team 34-6 in a two-quarter mini-game at Blaine High School Tuesday in a district tournament play-in contest.

    The loss eliminated the Wolves (2-7) from postseason play, setting up a game Friday or Saturday with Chimacum (4-5) in Port Townsend in a matchup of two teams who did not make the playoffs. The starting time has not been determined.

    Meridian went 70 yards in 13 plays, converting a fourth down along the way, on the game’s opening possession to go up 7-0.

    For the King’s football team, Green means go.

    Behind quarterback Billy Green, the No. 1-ranked Knights flew by Coupeville 51-7 Friday, Oct. 19, at Mickey Clark Field.

    Green, who will play for Brigham Young University next year, passed for 313 yards and four touchdowns (58, 5, 40 and 24 yards).
