    Oak Harbor residents will soon be paying 7 percent more on their city utility bills.
    City Council members unanimously approved the increase in water and storm drain rates during the Tuesday night meeting. Finance Director Doug Merriman explained that the hike was needed largely because of the cost of necessary construction projects, as well as growth in the cost of water purchased from the city of Anacortes.

    The sailor who accidentally shot himself and a woman in a parking lot scuffle outside of Oak Harbor’s Element Nightclub is going to jail for 30 days.
    Vincent Harrison, a 26-year-old Oak Harbor resident, pleaded guilty in Island County Superior Court Monday to attempted assault in the second degree. Under a plea bargain, a second charge of third-degree assault was dismissed.

    A 22-year-old Oak Harbor man accused of vehicular assault in an alcohol-related accident will not be pleading guilty after all, according to court documents.
    Reysan Reyes was scheduled to accept a plea bargain at a hearing in Island County Superior Court May 27, but instead he asked for a new attorney.

    An unusual accident led to a full-scale hazardous materials response in Oak Harbor Tuesday afternoon.
    State Trooper Joshua Lancaster said 87-year-old Frances Schultz of Oak Harbor was driving a 1998 Mercury Marquis southbound on Highway 20 and turned right onto Ault Field Road. She ran over grease tubes that had fallen out of another vehicle and had been smashed by cars.

    A sock-footed teenager wearing only underwear ran through Coupeville Tuesday afternoon after escaping from a Law and Justice Center courtroom.
    A 17-year-old Oak Harbor boy was pursued by Island County Sheriff Mark Brown, Coupeville Marshal Dave Penrod, several deputies, staff of the juvenile detention center, a corrections deputy and even members of the county Public Works Department.
