    Oak Harbor child molester heads to prison

    An Island County Superior Court judge handed a 49-year-old Oak Harbor child molester the maximum sentence at a hearing last Thursday.
    Earlier this year, a jury convicted Kenneth Martin of two counts of first-degree child molestation following a short trial.

    Island County elected officials will get a 5 percent pay increase next year after all.
    County Budget Director Elaine Marlow said she missed a deadline, so there’s no way to prevent the salary hike from kicking in.

    An Oak Harbor husband and wife, the parents of six children, have jumped into races for two Island County elected offices.
    At the same time, Camano Island resident Tom Riggs, a park ranger and a Democrat, is challenging state Rep. Barbara Bailey (R-Oak Harbor).
    By Tuesday afternoon, candidate filing week already had some surprises and a lot of familiar names. The Island County Auditor’s Office is keeping an updated list of candidates online.

    Two Oak Harbor residents were injured in separate accidents on North Whidbey over the weekend.
    Late Sunday afternoon, Jessica Adkins, a 19-year-old Oak Harbor woman, survived a one-car rollover accident in which she was ejected and ended up underneath the car. She was in stable condition at Whidbey General Hospital Tuesday morning.

    Candidate filing week opens Monday, June 7 and offers a wide range of Island County elected positions, as well as a number of legislative and judicial seats, for potential candidates to strive for.
    For the first time this year, the Island County Auditor’s Office is allowing candidates to file online and pay filing fees by credit or debit cards electronically.
