    An Oak Harbor man nearly lost his canine savior and constant companion to a disease that can be fatal to dogs, but few people seem aware of despite its prevalence in the Pacific Northwest.

    Darryl Newell hopes to change that on Whidbey Island by alerting dog owners, veterinarians and especially fishermen to the dangers of salmon poisoning. It’s an infectious disease that infects dogs, as well as coyotes and wolves, that ingest raw salmon, trout or giant salamanders.

    Members of the Western Washington Growth Management Hearings Board seemed sympathetic to arguments by the Oak Harbor city attorney during a lengthy hearing Monday over an issue that could shape the city in years to come.

    The board members sounded more skeptical, however, about City Attorney Margery Hite’s proposed solution.

    After three years of legal wrangling that made its way to the state Court of Appeals, the case against a 51-year-old Freeland businessman accused of injuring a passenger while driving intoxicated has finally been resolved.

    LeRoy Olsen III pleaded guilty to driving under the influence and reckless endangerment as part of a plea bargain. He was originally facing a felony vehicular assault charge.

    The case against an Oak Harbor man accused of committing a home-invasion robbery on North Whidbey last April fell apart, according to the Island County Prosecutor’s Office.

    The suspect, 48-year-old Richard Weatherford, has consistently maintained that deputies nabbed the wrong guy. Senior Deputy Prosecutor Eric Ohme said he didn’t have the evidence to prove the charges beyond a reasonable doubt.

    Island County officials have been trying to find money to build a new road on Central Whidbey for more than a decade. This fall they had some modest success.

    Public Works Director Bill Oakes said the county received a $790,000 grant from the Federal Highway Administration for design work, permitting and to purchase some right-of-way property for a new road that would link Houston and Race roads.

    The Island County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a credit card-related scam that hit Whidbey Island in the last couple of days.

    Detective Ed Wallace said quite a few people in the community, including nine employees of the sheriff’s office, received robo-calls from scammers who are trying to trick people into revealing their credit or debit card numbers and other sensitive data.

    The Island County Sheriff’s Office is warning North Whidbey residents about a rash of daytime burglaries.

    Sheriff Mark Brown sent out an “e-lert” to citizens Friday morning, echoing a warning from the Oak Harbor Police Department last month. Both agencies have seen an increase in daytime burglaries and in the amount of jewelry being stolen, which detectives believe may be related to the high price of gold and silver.

    The state Medical Quality Assurance Commission and the Department of Health suspended the license of Coupeville dermatologist Donald Russell Johnson for allegations of patient abandonment and criminal assault.

    The 30-year-old Oak Harbor man suspected of killing both his grandfathers insisted on acting as his own attorney, despite a judge’s repeated warnings against the idea.

    Joshua Lambert appeared in Island County Superior Court Monday afternoon for his arraignment. He pleaded not guilty to charges of first-degree murder and first-degree kidnapping.
