    Oak Harbor man prison-bound after assaulting wife, neighbor

    A 53-year-old Oak Harbor resident who assaulted his wife last summer and attacked a neighbor who came to help her, seriously injuring the man, will likely be sent to prison.

    Michael Monschau pleaded guilty in Island County Superior Court Jan. 9 to assault in the second degree with a deadly weapon enhancement, unlawful possession of a firearm in the second degree and assault in the fourth degree, a domestic-violence-related charge.

    A 31-year-old Navy man is accused of choking his wife and preventing her from calling for help, court documents indicate.

    A bundle of paper known as the Island County parks plan could have a wide impact on how Whidbey Islanders recreate in the future.

    Among the highlights of the plan is a policy to phase out the county’s investment in traditional recreation facilities, such as ball parks, and encourage hiking, bicycling and other low-impact activities. The policy guide suggests that hunting should be allowed in three large parks, but the areas should be closed to non-hunters during the season.

    The board charged with enforcing the state’s Growth Management Act ruled against the city of Oak Harbor in its wide-ranging appeal of the Island County commissioners’ effort to prevent urban sprawl.

    The Western Washington Growth Management Hearings Board rejected all 16 legal questions raised by the city. It was an especially stinging refutation of the city’s arguments since a former member of the hearings board, City Attorney Margery Hite, represented Oak Harbor.

    A former Coupeville dermatologist accused of domestic violence is free this week after spending two months in jail, according to court documents.

    People who are curious about the Barefoot Bandit should stay away from Coupeville Friday and instead go online to catch live action from the courtroom, law enforcement officials are begging.

    Colton Harris-Moore, the world-famous burglar and airplane thief, will be in Island County Superior Court Friday to enter 30 guilty pleas for crimes he allegedly committed in three counties.

    A media circus is coming to town. Detective Ed Wallace with the Island County Sheriff’s Office is coordinating the expected onslaught of TV cameras and reporters. He said the major TV networks will all be at the hearing, including NBC’s Dateline and possibly CBS’s 48 Hours.

    A 46-year-old woman who stole a wedding ring from a friend and two watches from a jewelry store was recently sent to prison.

    Reba Jo Lewis pleaded guilty in Island County Superior Court Nov. 30 to theft in the second degree and theft in the third degree. Under a plea bargain, the defense and prosecution recommended that Lewis be sentenced to a year and two months in prison.

    A 28-year-old Camano Island man apologized to his mother as he allegedly hit her with a flashlight and choked her to the point of unconsciousness, court documents state.

    The Island County prosecutor charged the man, Levon Rooney, in Island County Superior Court Dec. 7 with attempted murder in the first degree. His bail was set at $300,000.
