    Oak Harbor Mayor Scott Dudley returned to work this week after donating a kidney and promptly fired the city attorney.

    Meanwhile, other changes are coming soon to city leadership.

    The mayor didn’t return calls for comment Friday, but he sent out a notice to employees and council members that simply states Hawkins is no longer serving as the city attorney as of June 1.

    The Coast Guard rescued two divers Saturday who had been swept away in strong currents near Smith Island, which is six nautical miles west of Whidbey Island.

    The Coast Guard received a report that two divers had gone missing at 7:35 p.m. An MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew took off from Air Station Port Angeles and located the divers, who were using flashlights to signal for help, according to Coast Guard Petty Officer Nate Littlejohn.

    A 32-year-old man who had been convicted of assaulting his girlfriend saw his 10-week-old baby for the first time in Island County Superior Court Monday, May 21, but it may be awhile before he gets to see the infant again.

    The baby’s mother petitioned the court to rescind a court order that barred Joshua Graham from contacting her. Her request, however, ended with an angry exchange between a judge and the victim.

    The proximity of rare plants and an international communications cable may present obstacles for a plan to locate tidal turbines in Admiralty Inlet.

    The Snohomish County Public Utility District submitted a final license application in March to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission for a permit to install two energy-producing turbines in Admiralty Inlet. The proposed location is one kilometer west of Central Whidbey’s Keystone Harbor.

    Sex predators spur Island County forum on prevention

    An increase in reports of sexual assaults, including two high-profile sexual predator cases in Oak Harbor, has spurred the county sheriff and others to put together a panel discussion about the issue.

    Sheriff Mark Brown said the “Community Discussion of Predator Prevention” is aimed at educating parents and other adults about keeping children safe from sexual predators. He said a lot of people are talking and speculating about sex offenders and pedophiles because of the publicized cases, so it’s a good time to broach the subject.

    Detectives investigating a former church youth ministry leader accused of child molestation have found that he’s been in close contact with children through a number of entities in Oak Harbor over the years.

    Ronald Asplund, a 57-year-old Oak Harbor resident, was accused of molesting and raping two teenage boys. He met one of the boys through Oak Harbor Lutheran Church, where he had been the middle school ministry coordinator until a couple of months ago.
