    Landslide rocks Central Whidbey community

    An enormous landslide in Ledgewood this morning has severely damaged at least one home and impacted more than 30 others.

    The slide occurred in the Central Whidbey Community at about 4 a.m. Hundreds of feet of earth sloughed off from the bluff above Driftwood Way, destroying much of the road and knocking one home off its foundation.

    Human remains found on Coupeville beach spark intrigue

    Two visiting pre-med students discovered a human jawbone on a beach in Coupeville last week.

    Coupeville police launched an investigation, but Marshal Lance Davenport said there is little cause for public concern as the remains appear to be very old.

    Erosion on Coupeville’s Front Street could be costly

    Steady erosion over the next 50 years may damage portions of Front Street as well as dent the town’s pocket book.

    Fixing a problem area of about 400 feet now may cost Coupeville as much as $260,000, according to a town-hired consultant.

    Associated Earth Sciences, a Kirkland-based geotechnical engineering firm, recently released a geologic hazards assessment of the entire North East Front Street marine bluff area.

    Coupeville woman drives over bluff

    A Coupeville woman was sent to the hospital today after she drove her vehicle off a forested embankment along Penn Cove.

    Mary Gordon, 84, was transported to Whidbey General Hospital shortly after 2 p.m. Police said she did not appear to have been injured in the crash but that she later complained of body pains.

    Two Coupeville men were rescued by a U.S. Coast Guard helicopter crew Monday after their small boat was caught by strong winds and pushed out of Penn Cove and into Puget Sound.

    The two men and their dog, were hoisted to safety amidst 46-mph winds and six-to seven-foot seas.

    County looks at ban on net-pen farming

    Anticipating a difficult negotiation ahead with state regulators over their recent ban of net-pen salmon farming, the Island County Commissioners are putting high hopes on new legislation proposed in Olympia.

    House Bill 1599 would empower cities and counties to prohibit the siting of such facilities in their areas through provisions of long-range planning documents known as shoreline master programs.

    Town looks at outsourcing police, other options

    Under one of several options being considered by the Coupeville Town Council to address staffing woes in the Marshal’s Office, law enforcement services may be contracted out to a neighboring agency.

    Last week, the council unanimously approved a not-to-exceed $10,000 contract with Snohomish County Undersheriff Tom Davis for consulting services at their regular Tuesday meeting.
