    Drug safety improved at WGH

    Whidbey General Hospital pharmacy technician Cherie Post types in her password and swipes her finger across the reader.

    For the rest of her shift, the electronic device will accept Post’s fingerprint as a way to access the medications contained within the clear rectangular cabinet and she will not have to re-enter her passcode.

    This new system lets Post dispense the medications her patients need quickly — and accurately.

    Local mussels star in research on pollution

    On a recent sunny day, a group of volunteers were bundled up to insulate against the brisk winds that whipped across Penn Cove.

    The graduates of the 2012 class of Washington State University Island County Extension Beach Watchers dipped their gloved hands into bowls of cold water and pulled mollusk after mollusk out to take measurements.

    The mussels like it cool.

    It is the perfect spot for two friends, Vickie Chambers and Chuck Poust, to stop and reflect on the life of Charlotte Christensen, Coupeville’s beloved “hot dog lady.”

    Chicken barn preserved thanks to grant support

    Bill and Janis (Barrett) Skubi stand with beaming faces next to the wooden structure.

    They completed restoration work on their wood-shingled brooder house with the help of a matching grant from the Ebey’s Forever Fund, and they said they couldn’t be happier with how things turned out.

    “We’re really pleased,” Bill Skubi said. “We really feel supported by the community.”

    But hiring a lawyer would cost too much, and representing herself in court would have been almost impossible. English is not her native language, and the legal documents and court procedures seemed incomprehensible.

    Repairs help preserve Camp Casey history

    For the overnight facility at Camp Casey Conference Center southwest of Coupeville, the future is looking bright.

    “We are very excited,” said Darrell Jacobsen, site manager for the conference center and Fort Casey Inn.

    The center recently began extensive renovations.

    For the past 56 years, Seattle Pacific University has cared for this piece of history, but this stewardship has not always been easy.

    Truffle teams head to the woods

    Since moving to Whidbey Island 30 years ago, Maureen Murphy has been plucking chanterelles from the woods of South Whidbey.

    As a nature lover, horticulturalist and botanist, Murphy loves the experience of heading outdoors on a hunt for edible mushrooms.

    “To get out into the forest is a really beautiful experience,” Murphy said. “The smells, the fragrances are really potent after the first fall rain.”

    The Coupeville School Board has appointed a search committee to find the district’s next superintendent.

    Under the district’s usual practice, the committee members will sign a confidentiality agreement.

    The committee will identify what the school system wants in its next chief and what qualifications and characteristics that individual should possess.

    Ballot count requires attention to detail

    When Greenbank resident Anne Hallam called the Island County Elections Office with a problem with her ballot, she was shocked by the instructions they gave her.

    Hallam had voted, sealed the ballot inside the two envelopes, and signed her name. She then realized she had signed the envelope with her husband’s name typed on it.

    Stuurmans purchase makes way for street

    The Town of Coupeville is one step closer to building a new street to connect Broadway and North Main.

    A timeline has not yet been established for the transportation project, and Coupeville Mayor Nancy Conard said it could take 20-30 years for the Fourth Street extension to be completed.

    From downtown Coupeville, Madrona Way to Coveland Street currently provides the most direct connection between Broadway and Main streets. A secondary corridor meanders through residential neighborhoods.
