Letter: Socialism doesn’t work, stop trying to convince us

I read Julia Lary’s letter to the editor Saturday, May 4 with interest. Unfortunately, Lary did not give a simple example of where her form of socialism works.

If she is selling Bernie Sanders’ form of socialism all I can say it is easy for multimillionaires to tell us poor folk how to live.

If Ms. Lary was selling us Cuba socialism, it is not working. The Cubans, by nature, are happy and industrious folds.

From doctor to street cleaner, everyone must work and is paid a dollar an hour.

They must also rely on their relatives in Miami to send soap to wash themselves and clothes.

Venezuela socialism is not working either, yet the country sells millions of barrels of oil every day. The common folks in Venezuela have to start standing in line at 4 a.m. for the basic food needs. Couple that with daily inflation.

How about Denmark where everything is free?

Now, let’s see, income tax is 40 percent, the cost of gas is $10 a gallon and sales tax is 18 percent. Just in case Ms. Lary does not know, we already have socialism in America, it is called welfare.

You might even call it a growth industry with third-generation of the same family on welfare.

President Obama economics team on June 12, 2014 states that 4 percent GDP was no longer sustainable and 1 percent would be the norm. Have the past two years been the exception? I might as well kick in the unemployment rate at 3.7 percent, lowest since 1969.

Democracy has some short-comings, but let me quote Gen. Colin Powell, “our responsibility as lucky Americans, is to try to give back to this country as much as it has given us.”
