Whale enthusiasts are invited to the all-day workshop Ways of Whales from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Saturday at the Performing Arts Center, at 501 S. Main St., Coupeville.

The workshop, presented by Orca Network, will include a variety of whale- and salmon-related talks given by experts and educational displays with representatives from different organizations there to answer questions.

Attendees can also listen to music from Dana Lyons and receive updates on the Southern Resident whales and the campaign to return Lolita.

At the end, there will be a showing of the short film “Return of the King,” followed by a question and answer session with its filmmaker Florian Graner. He also has a Ph.D in marine biology in addition to his experience filming for shows like “River Monsters” and “Blue Planet.”

The workshop will include breaks, lunch and other opportunities to socialize.

“It’s sort of a place to meet and make new friends,” said Howard Garrett from the Orca Network.

Usually between 250 and 300 people attend the event, which has been held annually for almost 15 years, Garrett said.

Registration is $35 and $25 for seniors. Kids are welcome if they are “well behaved and very interested in whales,” he said. Walk-ins can also pay at the door.

“We feel it’s very important for people in general to understand the whales out here, to have a sense of the whales that live in the waters surrounding Whidbey Island,” Garrett said.

“It’s a very important ecosystem and it’s facing some real hazards right now, so it’s good for people to understand.”
