Shopping: Layaway tag tells too much

Published 5:00 pm Saturday, December 21, 2002

Your readers may be interested to know that papers with names, telephone numbers, and Social Security numbers are being used as layaway tags at the Navy Exchange. Today I picked up a layaway. My last name was on the front of a paper that was attached to my bag. On the back of that same piece of paper, there is a list of seven different names, phone numbers, and Social Security numbers. My husband call a few individuals that are on this list, and we found out that the numbers are legitimate. (We hope that others will voice their concerns).

I’m all for recycling. However, I believe papers with personal information such as Social Security numbers should be destroyed. I would support an increase of the $3 layaway fee if it is necessary, so that plain paper can be used for tagging merchandise put on layaway.
