Sarah Margaret Powell

Sarah Margaret Powell, 90, longtime former resident of Coupeville, passed away peacefully in her sleep Thursday, Jan. 8, 2004, in Higginsville, Mo.

Margaret was born on Dec. 12, 1913, in Everton, Ark., to George McAlpin and Stella Slover McAlpin. She resided in Everton until the early 1940’s, when the family moved to Lee’s Summit, Mo. During World War II she worked at the Pratt and Whitney plant in Kansas City, assembling military airplane engine parts.

On Dec. 12, 1945, she married Bill Powell of Coupeville and came to live in the Coupeville area for more than 40 years. She then moved to Higginsville, Mo., where she has since resided. While in Coupeville, she was actively involved in Coupeville United Methodist Church, in Women’s Aglow International, in Coupeville Homemakers Club and several other craft organizations. She loved her savior Jesus Christ dearly and spoke of the ways He took care of her.

Margaret was preceded in death by her daughter Betty Ann in 1947 and her husband Bill in 1970, as well as her parents and several brothers and sisters in Missouri and Arkansas. She is survived by her son Randy Nicolle and his wife Agatha of Oak Harbor; three grandchildren: Renee Walstead and husband Shawn of Chandler, Ariz.; Josh Nicolle and wife Julie of Coupeville and Jennifer Nicolle of Oak Harbor; seven great-grandchildren; also, her sister Stella Slagle of Higginsville, Mo., as well as many nieces and nephews.

Memorial services were held in Missouri. A graveside memorial service will be Saturday, Jan. 17, at 3 p.m., at Sunnsyide Cemetery, Pastor David Engle officiating.
