Robert Squires

Mr. Robert Leon Squires, 84, of Carrollton, Ga., died Jan. 6, 2012.
Mr. Squires was born in Nampa, Idaho, on Aug. 18, 1927, the son of the late Byron Squires and Tesa Elizabeth Jussup Squires.
Mr. Squires enlisted in the U.S. Navy during World War II where he served in the South Pacific aboard the USS Katashan Bay. After the war he worked as a stoker for the U.S. Army Transportation Service transporting troops and families from the U.S. to Japan. Returning to Washington state, Mr. Squires completed technical school and began an apprenticeship with Seattle City Light as a lineman. As a journeyman lineman he worked in Alaska, eventually returning to Washington to work for Puget Power. Known to his co-workers as Curley, he was a valued and respected employee for more than 35 years.
He enjoyed fishing and boating in Puget Sound and traveling with his wife, Lori. In the early ‘50s, Mr. Squires gained national recognition in motorcycling magazines when he completed an arduous trip across the North Cascade Mountains on his Matchless motorcycle along with two companions.
Mr. Squires was a member of the Elks and the American Legion. He attended Tabernacle Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Lori Ethel Fuller Squires; son, Christopher Squires of Sacramento; daughter, Sheryl Bircham of Olympia; step-children, Jerry Blissett of Stockbridge, Steve Fuller of Carrollton and Angela Thompson of Carrollton; sisters, Norma Lee Runquist of Pasadena, Calif. and Kathleen Hevenor of Napa Valley, Calif.; brothers, George Squires of Bothell, Barry Squires of Willits, Calif., and Daryl Squires of Spokane; six grandchildren and several great grandchildren.
A memorial service was held Jan. 10 at the chapel of Almon Funeral Home with Rev. Curtis Forman and Rev. Jerry Blissett officiating. American Legion Post 145 Legion Riders and Patriot Guard provided military honors.
