Tobey Piercy Milne, born Oct. 10, 1939, of Southern Shores, N.C., died at home on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 27, 2008, after a long struggle with breast cancer. She was lovingly attended by her immediate family. Other family members and many friends were part of her “transition team.”
She is survived by her husband Robert C. Milne; her sons Michael and Andrew, and daughter-in-law Jalila; granddaughter Alexa; and brother Gordon C. Piercy and his family in Coupeville.
A graduate of Duke University, Tobey taught elementary school in North Carolina and California before moving for two years with her family to Kenya. She received her master’s degree from Catholic University in Social Work and held positions at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and a United Way community agency. While living in Reston, Va., Tobey was an adjunct professor for George Mason University, teaching graduate social work. She was a licensed psychotherapist in private practice in northern Virginia for over 20 years and in North Carolina for the last decade.
After retiring to the Outer Banks of North Carolina, Tobey provided sessions of Resonance Repatterning to individuals, couples, and women’s groups. Tobey served on the Boards of League of Women’s Voters and the Southern Shores Community Association. She was instrumental in the leadership and formation of the Grassroots for Barack Obama, in establishing the first office for a presidential candidate on the OBX. Tobey danced at the Obama victory party at Kelley’s! She is loved by many and shall be forgotten by none.
