James Allan Abbie was born Feb. 23, 1939 in Livingston, Mont., to Lester C. and Helen M. Abbie. He died April 18, 2007 at his home in Oak Harbor.
Jimmy was raised in Yellowstone Park, which was perfect for such an active, athletic man. He graduated in architecture from Montana State University in Bozeman, Mont., and spent most of his adult life downhill and cross country skiing, mountain climbing and traveling. He was drafted into the Army and spent almost three years in Germany, skiing in some of the famous ski areas and then spent many years teaching skiing and working as an architect in Vail, Colo.
When Jimmy started working for the Navy (in a civilian capacity) he was stationed in Great Lakes, Mich., and since downhill skiing wasn’t available, he switched to some strenuous cross country team skiing. He was also an enthusiastic and skilled sail boater. When a position at Whidbey Island became available, he moved to Oak Harbor and was able to resume his skiing, camping, hiking and traveling.
Jimmy is survived by his brother, Jerry with wife Dee of Billings, Mont., along with their children Deni, with husband Jack Muhlbeier and Hall with wife Jo Abbie, all of Dallas, Texas. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Bob. Bob’s children are Cindy with husband Dwight Allbritter and Gary Abbie of Houston, Texas and Joy with husband Dennis Zemski of Sheridan, Wyo.
