Louis Scarpino, 75, died at home March 18, 2006 after an extended illness. He was born May 25, 1930 in Omaha, Neb., to Joseph and Angeline Scarpino.

Louis grew up in the Omaha area and was a devoted Nebraska Cornhusker football fan. It didn’t matter what else was going on or how he felt, if there was a game on, he was watching or listening to it. He also had a great passion for Italian music by Mario Lanza, Frankie Lane and the Three Tenors. He enjoyed old movies, especially the classic westerns.

From the age of 19 he loved driving trucks. He spent over 40 years of his life working as a truck driver. Louis also served in the U.S. Army and was a veteran of the Korean War. He was able to carry on his truck driving passion as an ambulance driver for the Army. He was proud of his military service and his country.

Louis and Nancy were married in Omaha on March 30, 1962. They spent 43 event filled years together, staying together and relying on each other until the very end.

In December of 2004, with his declining health, they chose to move to Oak Harbor where their youngest daughter lived, so that they might be close to family during his final months.

Louis was a kind and giving man. He and his wife Nancy had five beautiful children, all of which they adopted. He always provided for the children, even if he and Nancy had to do without some of the things they would like to have had. He provided a loving home where each child knew just how special they were, because Louis and Nancy picked them to share their lives with.

Community meant a lot to Louis. He was a member of the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Fraternal Order of Eagles. Giving back to the community and supporting those who served our country were important things to him.

Louis was preceded in death by one son, Larry. He is survived by his wife Nancy of 43 years at the family home in Oak Harbor; daughters Renee Lopez and her husband Jesus of Oak Harbor and Stephanie Jumps with husband Roy of St. Louis, Mo.; sons Ramon of Des Moines, Iowa and Christopher of Omaha, Neb.; along with 10 grandchildren: Marc, Lacy, Erica, Larry, James, Michael, Ramon, Morgan, Louie and Robert. He also leaves one great grandchild, Owen; and brothers Joseph and Robert Scarpino, both of Omaha.

Visitation for Louis Scarpino will be held at Burley Funeral Chapel Saturday, March 25, from 9 a.m to 1 p.m., followed by a service there at 2 p.m., with a graveside service to follow at Maple Leaf Cemetery.
